The Competition -
watercolor on paper, 22" h x 30" w
Where's the competition? It’s in the painting, of course,
the painting is not competing with other paintings, but the elements
within are competing with each other. The flowers are
competing, each trying to be more beautiful than it’s neighbor, each
vying for attention in the garden. “Who is the fairest of us all?”
The real flowers are competing with the painted flowers around the
window and door. The complimentary colors are doing their natural
dance. Green is competing with the red, the blue is competing
with the yellow/orange.
The inspiration for this painting was a building in Santa Fe, New
Mexico, but the inspiration for the feeling of this painting was the
garden itself.
I frequently paint this subject matter in many different sizes and
formats, large and small, watercolor, acrylic and occasionally, oil.
The flowers in this country are always brilliant in color.
Perhaps it's the unexpectedness of their existence in this arid
landscape that makes them seem more colorful.
I've seen the same flowers in the same colors in landscapes with
more moisture and vegetation, but the colors are not as brilliant.
The abode buildings of Santa Fe, Taos, Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave
Creek make a wonderful backdrop for any garden.
Monitor settings may make a difference in the colors and values you see. I've adjusted these photos to look as close to the originals as possible, but I cannot see what is on your monitor. There is more information on my FAQ page about monitor settings.
