East of Taos, New Mexico are many beautiful southwestern style adobe homes. I've visited there a few times and those homes were the inspiration for this painting. Taos, Santa Fe, Carefree and other places in the southwest have a more relaxed view on what a garden and yard should be. There are usually wildflowers sneaking out into the landscape and into the garden. As long as they are pretty they are allowed anywhere. The high desert of Taos has a little more moisture than some areas of the southwest and can be more lush in the summer.
