Barrel Cactus

Barrel Cactus in Arizona desert artist Barbara Ann Spencer Jump

Barrel Cactus, watercolor painting on 140 lb paper, 11 7/8"h x 9"w

The barrel cactus confuses a lot of people who are new to the desert.  It is often mistaken for a young saguaro.  But like anything else in life, there are many differences in the cacti that are easy to recognize when you know what the differences are. The barrel cactus has a hook on the end, and it blooms in the crown with bright orange flowers.  The fruit is yellow.
