Organ Pipe Cactus

Organ Pipe original watercolor painting

Among Friends IV

Watercolor painting on 300 lb paper - 17" x 11"

This painting has three companions for a total of four pieces

The organ pipe is such a close cousin of the saguaro that it's often mistaken.  The size is very close, as certain ages, but all of it's arms grow from the ground and it doesn't seem to develop arms on a trunk the way that a saguaro does. It blooms in the same time of the year as the saguaro, but the organ pipe is only found in gardens and yards here in the city.  The National Monument borders on the International border with Mexico.  We haven't visited there very often, and we've never timed it just right for the organ pipe blooms.

The saguaro is king, the ocotillo is queen, the barrel cactus and the organ pipe join the hedgehog and the prickly pear in making our desert very colorful as well as very thorny.

All four paintings, Among Friends I, II, III & IV:

Monitor settings may make a difference in the colors and values you see.  I've adjusted these photos to look as close to the originals as possible, but I cannot see what is on your monitor.  There is more information on my FAQ page about monitor settings.
