
The barrel cactus has a lot of the same qualities as the saguaro, but there are big differences. Both are columnar in shape, the barrel doesn't grow as tall, and the flowers and needles are completely different. The 'tuna' (fruit) is yellow and not red.
The wildflowers in the desert often look as if an artist has splashed colorful paint here and there. When you look closely you'll see that the wildflowers usually vary as much as the cacti does. There will be patches of violet, then yellow-orange, then red violet, bright yellow and red orange. Since I love the desert even when she is somber, I welcome the coat of many colors that covers her in the spring.
